How to Use a Jack for a Car
Need to use a jack stand? No problem! Follow these simple steps on how to use a jack for a car:
- Park the car securely on level ground and set the parking brake. Never use a jack stand on dirt or grass!!
- Place wheel wedges, wooden blocks, or bricks behind all the wheels that are remaining on the ground. This helps to prevent rolling.
- If your car has a manual transmission, put it in first gear as an extra precaution.
- Read your owner’s manual to find out where the jack should be placed beneath your car. If you need to lift only one wheel, lift that corner of the car. If you need to lift the front or rear of the car, choose a jack stand point at the center of the frame on the front or rear of the vehicle.
- There are two types of jack stands: scissor and hydraulic. With a scissor jack, insert the rod and crank. With a hydraulic jack, insert the handle into the jack’s body and pump the handle up and down to lift your car to the desired height.
- Place the jack stand under the car frame at the “pinch weld,” a reinforced point on your car’s frame.
- Adjust the height of the stand to where you’ll be able to remove the wheel and then lock it into place.
- Gently push the car to make sure it won’t move.
- After finishing your work, lower the car gently back to the ground, then remove the jack.
